Fashion is full of information, yet garments know very little about themselves.
A care label can name a fiber blend and washing temperature. A hangtag can tell a brief origin story. An ecommerce page may describe a collection. Once the packaging disappears and the page changes, the garment is largely on its own.
Digital product passports offer fashion a more durable connection between the physical item and its history. That history can help a customer care for a garment, a repairer work on it, a resale platform verify it, and a sorter understand what to do when it is no longer wearable.
The opportunity is larger than adding a QR code. It is a chance to redesign how product knowledge moves through a fragmented industry.

Why fashion is a demanding test
Fashion supply chains combine complex materials, short development cycles, frequent supplier changes, and a huge range of product values. One garment may contain:
- a main fabric with several fiber types;
- lining, interlining, thread, elastic, buttons, and zippers;
- dyes, prints, coatings, and finishing chemistry;
- packaging and labels from separate sources;
- production steps across multiple facilities.
The final brand may be several tiers away from raw-material production. Records may exist at style, order, batch, roll, or facility level—and those levels do not always connect cleanly.
This makes fashion passports valuable, but it also makes easy claims dangerous. A map with several pins can look transparent without proving that the displayed material entered the scanned garment.
What a garment passport could contain
The most useful fields follow the garment through distinct moments.

Public content should be written in plain language. “Shell: 100% cotton” is useful, but a passport can go further: yarn or fabric origin, whether a claim applies to the whole garment or one component, and the evidence date.
Care guidance can also become more contextual. Instead of repeating universal symbols, it can explain how to air, spot-clean, mend, or store the specific construction.
Data callout: The longest phase of a garment’s life often begins after purchase. Passport design should devote at least as much attention to use, repair, and transfer as it does to the initial origin story.
Identity: style, batch, or item?
Fashion brands must decide what the code identifies.
A style-level passport gives every unit of one design the same record. It is inexpensive and appropriate for shared composition, care, and design information.
A batch-level passport can reflect differences in dye lot, production order, factory, or material source. This is helpful when a style is produced across several seasons or facilities.
An item-level passport gives each garment a unique identity. It supports authenticity, ownership transfer, repair history, limited-edition storytelling, and richer resale services. It also adds cost and operational complexity.
Not every T-shirt needs serialization. A practical system can combine levels: shared style data, batch-specific production facts, and unique identity for categories where lifecycle value justifies it.
From fiber claim to evidence
Fashion claims frequently depend on chain-of-custody models. Materials may be physically segregated, mixed under controlled rules, attributed through mass balance, or represented through certificate systems. The visible language must accurately reflect that method.1
A passport should distinguish among:
- measured composition;
- supplier-declared content;
- certified input;
- calculated or allocated value;
- country of a specific process;
- general supplier-network information.
These are all potentially useful. They are not the same kind of fact.

Care is a traceability feature
Fashion passports are often presented as transparency tools, but care may be their most immediate circular function.
A well-designed care view can include:
- routine care that prevents unnecessary washing;
- stain guidance appropriate to the fiber and finish;
- instructions for replacing a button or repairing a seam;
- warnings about treatments that could damage the garment;
- brand or third-party repair options;
- spare trim or thread references;
- alteration notes for future owners.
If a repair occurs, an item-level passport can record it without exposing personal customer information. That history may support resale by showing that maintenance, not damage, explains a changed component.
Passports and fashion resale
Resale is a natural use case because identity and information affect trust.
A unique passport can help a platform confirm that a code resolves to a plausible product record. It can show original specifications, authenticate a brand-issued identity, and carry verified service events. The next owner can receive care guidance immediately.
However, a QR code alone is easy to copy. High-value authentication needs a threat model that considers cloned identifiers, detached tags, altered products, and compromised accounts. Ownership transfer also needs care. A passport should not publish who owns a garment. It can allow a private claim-and-transfer process while keeping public product history separate from personal identity.
The recovery reality
At end of use, a garment must first be assessed for reuse. If it is not wearable, sorting depends on composition, condition, construction, and available local processes.
A passport can provide more precise data than a faded care label, but information alone does not create recycling capacity. Blended fibers, elastane content, coatings, and hard-to-remove trims may still limit recovery. Collection and sorting systems must also be able to read and use the record.
Brands should involve sorters and recyclers when defining end-of-life fields. A poetic material story is not a disassembly instruction.
A credible first fashion passport
Brands can begin with one category and a restrained promise:
- define product identity and carrier durability;
- map style, batch, and item data separately;
- standardize material and process terminology;
- link important claims to their scope and evidence;
- design customer, repair, and recovery views;
- establish correction and version workflows;
- test the scan after washing, wear, resale, and repair.
Success should be measured through use: care-guide engagement, repair completion, resale verification, data completeness, supplier response time, and recovery-partner usefulness.
Fashion has always used labels to express identity. The next generation of identity can be more practical. A garment passport can preserve the knowledge that helps an item remain understood as it moves from wardrobe to wardrobe—and, eventually, from product back to material.
