FEBRUARY 2027
is an operating deadline.

EV / LMT / INDUSTRIAL > 2 KWH

The EU battery passport is one of the first large-scale Digital Product Passport obligations to become operational. This brief turns the regulation and current Commission guidance into a practical preparation map.

MANDATORY FROM18.02.2027

Each electric-vehicle battery, light-means-of-transport battery, and industrial battery above 2 kWh placed on the EU market or put into service must have an electronic battery passport.

ARTICLE 77 / PRIMARY SOURCE
PUBLIC LAYER

MODEL DATA

  • Battery model and manufacturer information
  • Material composition, chemistry, hazardous substances, and critical raw materials
  • Carbon-footprint information where applicable
  • Responsible-sourcing and recycled-content information where applicable
  • Rated capacity, voltage, power capability, expected lifetime, and related performance data
  • Warranty, efficiency, resistance, conformity, markings, and waste-prevention information
CONTROLLED ACCESS

RESTRICTED + INDIVIDUAL DATA

  • Detailed cathode, anode, electrolyte, spare-part, dismantling, and safety information for legitimate-interest access
  • Compliance test reports for notified bodies, market-surveillance authorities, and the Commission
  • Individual-battery performance, state of health, status, use history, cycle count, negative events, operating conditions, and state of charge for legitimate-interest access
01

Confirm whether the battery is in scope

The 18 February 2027 passport requirement covers each EV battery, each LMT battery, and each industrial battery with capacity greater than 2 kWh placed on the market or put into service.

02

Map the 71 Commission guidance data points

Use the Commission's current battery-passport data-point guidance to identify which fields are mandatory, conditional, optional, or not required for the relevant battery category.

03

Separate public and controlled-access data

Battery-passport information is not one public dataset. The regulation creates different access layers for the public, authorities, and actors with a legitimate interest.

04

Design item-level identity and QR linkage

The battery passport is linked through the Article 13 QR code to a unique identifier attributed by the economic operator placing the battery on the market.

05

Plan for lifecycle updates

Individual-battery records include changing information such as state of health, status, use history, cycles, incidents, operating conditions, and state of charge.

06

Prepare Registry operations

The economic operator placing the battery on the market or putting it into service must upload the unique identifier to the EU DPP Registry.

71 DATA POINTS.
Different rules by category.

The Commission's current guidance consolidates 71 battery-passport data points and indicates whether each is mandatory, conditional, optional, or not required as of February 2027 for EV, LMT, and industrial batteries. Treat that guidance as an implementation aid and read it together with the Batteries Regulation and subsequent acts.
