Most product systems are optimized for a single decisive moment: the sale.

Design, production, distribution, advertising, and retail all converge on ownership. After checkout, the product crosses into a quieter phase. Information fragments. The maker may know little about repairs, transfers, or final disposal. The owner may have no simple route back to the people who could keep the object in use.

A circular economy requires more than a different material at manufacture. It requires return journeys—and knowledge that can travel with the product through each one.

Ownership is one event, not the whole lifecycle

A durable object can move through many states:

  1. manufactured;
  2. sold;
  3. used;
  4. maintained;
  5. repaired;
  6. transferred;
  7. refurbished;
  8. redeployed;
  9. harvested for parts;
  10. recovered as material.

Traditional records often stop around step two. Circular services begin at step three.

A digital product passport can preserve continuity across these states. It gives the product an identity and creates a place for relevant events, instructions, evidence, and condition assessments.

That record does not make the loop happen. Logistics, incentives, product design, service capacity, and viable recovery processes are still essential. But without information, each handoff becomes slower and riskier.

The return journeys

Circularity is often drawn as one elegant loop. In practice, products follow several possible paths.

Transfer without surveillance

Ownership creates a privacy challenge. A passport may need to support warranties, transfers, service access, or proof of legitimate possession. It does not need to publish the owner’s name or create a permanent trail of personal behavior.

Product identity and personal identity should be separated.

A private account can hold the relationship between a person and an item. The transferable product record can contain non-personal facts: manufacture, authorized repair, component change, condition assessment, or refurbishment. During resale, the current owner can consent to a transfer without exposing previous owners.

Making care visible

Care is a form of value creation, but the market rarely recognizes it.

Two identical appliances may appear equivalent in a listing. One was maintained, repaired with compatible parts, and inspected recently. The other has an unknown history. If trusted events can distinguish them, the cared-for product can earn confidence and potentially a higher value.

This creates a feedback loop:

  • visible maintenance improves resale confidence;
  • stronger resale value rewards care;
  • rewarded care extends useful life;
  • longer life improves the economics of service and parts.

The passport is the record that lets care survive the change of owner.

Not every event needs formal verification. The system can label owner-entered notes separately from authorized service records. Different evidence types can coexist without pretending they carry equal assurance.

Product-as-a-service needs product memory

Rental, leasing, subscription, and performance-based models keep the provider connected to the asset. These models can create strong incentives for durability because the provider captures more value when products remain useful.

They also depend on good records. Operators need to know:

  • which exact unit is in service;
  • its configuration and compatible parts;
  • when maintenance is due;
  • what happened during prior deployments;
  • its current condition and next suitable use;
  • when recovery is economically preferable.

Information must meet physical design

A detailed passport attached to a glued, mixed-material, unrepairable product does not create circularity. The physical object and its information architecture must be designed together.

Circular readiness may require:

  • accessible fasteners and documented disassembly;
  • replaceable high-wear components;
  • durable product and part identifiers;
  • available repair parts;
  • materials compatible with real recovery processes;
  • diagnostic access;
  • take-back and reverse-logistics pathways.

The passport makes these qualities visible and usable. It can tell a technician where the fastener is, a parts system which component fits, or a sorter what the polymer is. It cannot compensate when those pathways do not exist.

Who writes the next chapter?

Manufacturers typically create the initial record, but circularity involves additional authors.

An authorized repairer may add a service event. A refurbisher may record testing and a new warranty. A resale platform may add a condition report. A recycler may record recovered outputs. The passport needs permissions and schemas that allow these parties to contribute without altering original facts.

Governance should answer:

  1. Which actors are trusted for which events?
  2. Can an owner add notes?
  3. How are disputes handled?
  4. What happens when an unauthorized component is installed?
  5. Does a remanufactured product receive a new identity, a linked identity, or a new version?
  6. How long does each record remain accessible?

These are product-policy questions as much as software questions.

Circularity as a service experience

The best circular pathway is useless if the owner cannot find it.

A passport can make the next action immediate: locate a repair provider, identify a part, request a return, prepare an item for resale, or find a suitable collection point. The experience should respond to product identity, condition, region, and available services.

Static end-of-life copy often fails because circumstances change. A maintained passport can offer current options while preserving stable product facts.

Beyond the first owner

The transition to circularity is not a transition away from ownership in every category. It is a transition away from treating the first sale as the end of product responsibility and product knowledge.

Objects will still be bought, loved, worn, used, and changed. What can improve is the continuity around them. Identity can survive transfer. Care can remain visible. Recovery instructions can arrive at the right moment. New participants can add trustworthy chapters without erasing the old ones.

A circular product is not merely one that can theoretically return. It is one that can be recognized, evaluated, and directed when the opportunity to return actually appears.
